Measuring Garden and Plot Gates: Clear Opening and Installation
A gate cannot be specified solely by measuring between two posts. Clear access, leaf dimensions, hinge allowances and supports are different measurements. Define users and vehicles first, then assess movement space and ground. In Ankara, state in writing whether the requested dimension means a usable clear opening or a manufacturing dimension before approving a garden or plot gate.
Define practical access
Pedestrians, garden equipment and vehicles need different openings. For a vehicle consider mirrors, approach angle and turning space as well as body width. A wider gate alone cannot overcome a narrow approach. Do not assume the public road is available for the gate swing. Explain the largest intended use to the installer and establish access through site assessment rather than a universal recommended width.
Separate post and manufacturing dimensions
Clear opening, gate leaf size and distance between posts need not be identical. Hinges, lock receivers and fitting allowances depend on the model. Name each dimension separately on the drawing. Check existing post spacing at different heights and report leaning or uneven surfaces. Do not invent deductions before choosing the model; confirm the manufacturer’s drawing against measured conditions before production.
Check movement and finished ground
The swing area of single or double leaves must remain clear. Rising ground may catch a leaf even when closed-position clearance looks adequate. A sliding design needs suitable space to the side and its required supports. Record drains, thresholds and concrete. Changing gate type can alter groundwork as well as price. State automation requirements early, and account for future paving levels.
Treat gate posts as distinct supports
Gate weight and movement act differently from the adjoining fence. A sound-looking existing post is not proof of suitability. Assess its section, foundation and connections with the selected gate, and show how the mesh terminates beside it. List replacement posts, extra bracing, old-gate removal and surface reinstatement separately instead of accepting an unclear low-priced package.
Use one approved sketch through handover
Record clear opening, height, post positions, swing direction and levels; date photographs and confirm finished ground. Check hinges, lock, handles, coating and installation scope in the quote. At handover operate the gate several times and record rubbing, lock problems or post movement. This is not a substitute for technical inspection. Agree corrective work and a recheck date in writing.
| Dimension | Meaning | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Clear opening | Usable passage | Users and approach |
| Leaf size | Moving manufactured part | Approved drawing |
| Post opening | Distance between supports | Measured position |
| Movement area | Gate travel | Obstacles and levels |
Example decision brief
A gate may clear the ground when closed yet approach rising ground as it opens. Add movement-area photographs and future paving levels to the same drawing. This establishes conditions rather than a universal bottom gap. If only the leaf is quoted, request post and ground adaptations separately; an example cannot replace actual vehicle-access assessment.
